Using the Disaster Emergency Message Dial Service

Record a message

  • Dial 171
  • Press1 to record a message
  • Enter your phone number, including the area code
  • Press 1, then #
    →Record a message

What to include in your message

  • The time and date
  • Whether you and your family are safe (including any injuries, ailments, and your environment)
  • Damage from the disaster
  • Your location (evacuation site, where you are staying, etc.)
  • How to contact you
  • Press 9, then #
    →Recording stops

Play messages

  • Dial 171
  • Press2 to record a message
  • Enter your phone number, including the area code
  • Press 1, then #
    →Listen to messages

About the Disaster Emergency Message Dial service

  • Recording length: Up to 30 seconds Storage period: 48 hours from the time of recording
  • Number of recordings per phone number: Up to 10
  • Can be used when phone lines are busy and calling family members directly is difficult
  • Made available after earthquakes that are 6 Lower or above on the JMA Seismic Intensity Scale

Posting a message (exact steps may vary)

  • On the homepage of any major phone company, select the link to the Disaster Message Board
  • When given an option to post or check messages, select the post option
  • Select the status you want to post

  • Post your message
    →Message posting is complete

Checking messages

  • On the homepage of any major phone company, select the link to the Disaster Message Board
  • When given an option to post or check messages, select the check option
  • Search for messages using the poster’s phone number
  • →The message search results will be appear

About the Disaster Message Board service

  • This is a service provided through cooperation among mobile phone carriers. The service allows searching through messages posted on the boards of all companies at once.
  • Can be used when phone lines are busy and calling family members directly is difficult
  • Made available after earthquakes that are 6 Lower or above on the JMA Seismic Intensity Scale

Practice to Be Ready for Disasters: Trial Days

The 171 Disaster Emergency Message Dial and Disaster Message Board services offer trial days, when anyone can practice using them. Try out these services for yourself on any of the following trial days.

  • The 1st and 15th of every month
  • January 1–3
  • Disaster Preparedness Week (August 30–September 5)
  • Disaster Preparedness and Volunteer Week (January 15–21)
