Confirming the Safety

Protecting Yourself

Protecting Yourself

If you see or hear an earthquake alert, shout “Earthquake!” to alert others. Stay calm and take steps to protect yourself before all else.

When Indoors

  • Shelter under a table
  • Move away from large furniture or equipment that could fall over
  • When the shaking stops, quickly put out any fires or embers
  • Open doors to secure an escape route
  • Do not rush outside in a panic

When Outdoors

  • Protect your head with your bag or clothing
  • Stay away from concrete block walls, gates, ledges, riverbanks, etc.

After the Shaking Stops

Help your colleagues and neighbors! Cooperate with others around you to evacuate to a safe location.

  • Check the safety of your colleagues and workplace
  • Work together to rescue anyone trapped or hurt, provide first aid, and put out fires
  • Take firm action based on firm information
  • Always evacuate on foot, bringing with you the minimum necessary
  • Check the safety of electrical and gas lines before leaving
  • If outside your workplace or working from home, report whether you are safe to the company
  • Beware of landslides and collapsing buildings
  • If near the coast, evacuate as quickly as possible to high ground or a robust, steel-framed building tall enough to avoid inundation

10 Essentials When Evacuating

Things to keep in mind for your safety when evacuating in an emergency

What to wear

  • Hat (helmet or other protective headgear)
  • Clothing that leaves both hands free and is easy to move in (long pants, long sleeves)
  • Socks, work gloves, whistle (helpful if available)
  • A backpack packed with necessary supplies

What to do

  • Shut doors and windows, turn off circuit breakers, completely shut off gas

  • Always evacuate on foot, staying away from concrete block walls, utility poles, show windows, and vending machines
  • Take wide streets whenever possible
  • In the event of fires, pay attention to the direction of the wind
  • If you cannot get out the front door of an apartment above the ground floor, use fire escapes or emergency ladders on balconies, etc.
